Spotify, the music streaming service, recently released several new features that integrate AI into the music listening experience. Spotify DJ is a personalized AI “guide” that supplements the service’s existing algorithms. Smart Shuffle recommends new songs interspersed within users’ existing Spotify playlists. Users may want to know how Spotify uses their data, and how innovative is the new AI technology. Are these features useful tools for discovering new music or mere corporate hype? To get some idea, we analyzed the data between songs Spotify AI suggests through different genres and investigated Spotify’s usage of AI and user data.
