Health Insurance in the United States (2021)

Health insurance continues to be a controversial issue in the United States, with millions going uninsured every year. There is a clear distinction between upper and lower socioeconomic status in obtaining individual and family insurance. This presentation aims to identify barriers that inhibit adequate health care, with a comparison based on one’s socioeconomic status. Statistics taken from government agencies identifies key determinants that prevent health insurance procurement. The data shows who obtains health insurance by race and highlights what type of insurance is secured (whether by employment or other means). Results have shown that the quality of health coverage available is determined by barriers such as lack of community resources like accessible public transportation, location, and job opportunities. We conclude that social and equity determinants influence the type of insurance that is secured, and how insurance affects individuals overall health.
