This research surveys women’s and gender studies content in New York State high school curricula. Existing research shows that students benefit from learning about topics related to women’s and gender studies in high school curricula, even as current public controversy and legislation attempts to limit its inclusion. Data for this study were collected through a review of literary sources, an analysis of New York State education standards, and semi-structured interviews with high school social studies teachers. The findings indicate a general lack of women’s and gender studies content in official standards and curricula even as interview data show that many teachers independently incorporate this material into their teaching. This research suggests that teachers see the benefit of including these topics in the classroom but are limited by education standards.
