ENVR 470 Sustainable Composting & Freecycling (2025)

Student(s): Emily Yousey, Liam O’Neil, Ryan Goss
Project Mentor(s): Jessica Pearson

As interns in ENVR 470, the Applied Sustainability capstone class, we focused on composting and waste management on campus. Composting in the dining halls started in Spring 2024. This semester we distributed composting cans to the twelve Townhouses that volunteered to participate, coordinating bin collection with the Whitten Family Farms. We also continued a previous initiative tabling in the Student Union to help patrons understand what could be composted. To promote education about the composting process, we created a website dedicated to sustainability actions on campus. To help improve other aspects of waste management across campus, we partnered with the Environmental Club to establish a Freecycle beginning on May 9th – collection locations will be set up in Lehman, Bowman, and the Townhouses for students to leave donations and take what they need.
