The Woodstock ‘99 music festival marked the 30th anniversary of the iconic original Woodstock festival with a much-heralded summer concert weekend in Rome, New York. Rather than peace and love, general chaos ensued. Logistical issues, including overcrowding, insufficient facilities, and high prices for food and water, as well as scorching heat, made the event unpleasant for many attendees. Incidents of violence, vandalism, and sexual assault were reported. Despite the talented and diverse lineup—rock, rap, and electronic music artists performed—Woodstock ‘99 is often remembered chiefly for its chaotic atmosphere and negative headlines. Woodstock ‘99 is not a festival to forget.
