Education in America is a structured institution that unequally affects students and leaves populations of children at a disadvantage as they begin adult life. This poster presents four main areas of research: historical and current trends and patterns; policies; effects of life chances and quality; and current affairs. Research was conducted by reviewing educational websites. Research on historical trends in education shows that while racial achievement/graduation gaps are closing, minority students are still at a disadvantage. To close these gaps, many policies have been created; although some have helped, most have failed and even made things worse. Research shows that financially poor students are worst off because their schools receive less funding due to their location in poorer neighborhoods. Today, we can see that students are graduating with more debt than past generations, leading to them retiring later in life.
