Significance of Hand-Shaped Glyphs in Maya Hieroglyphic Script (2021)

Mayan hieroglyphic script is an ancient writing system from Mexico. Many glyphs, or characters, can be used interchangeably for other glyphs with the same meaning or sound value. This project explores whether that interchangeability is related to sound value. Drawing hieroglyphic texts from six major Mayan sites, a database of hand-shaped glyphs was created and analyzed for sound value, meaning, context, and display (whether located inside or outside buildings). Results suggest that sound value is not a factor; based on current data, other hypotheses remain inconclusive.
