My project tracks New York City’s recent record of shooting incidents to determine whether the pandemic caused a spike in gun violence. Using the crime analysis tool and ArcGIS Pro I mapped the data to represent the changes from the pre-pandemic years through the pandemic and into the post pandemic era. A big increase in shooting incidents occurred during the pandemic’s early months, and it did not subside to pre-pandemic levels in 2021. The greatest increase in gun violence occurred in the borough of Brooklyn. For greater insight, we examined individual precincts and ran a hotspot analysis. Our goal was to inform people about where these incidents were happening and how, in future, they might be prevented. I hope people seeing my research gain understanding of the social consequences of the pandemic.
