Housing Inequality in the United States (2021)

In the United States, individuals face many social challenges, including inequality within the housing market. Factors that shape outcomes include location, generational differences, and income disparities. Policies such as the community land trust, community development corporation, and the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act have had a lasting impact on housing structure. It is also important to factor in the current state of affairs, such as rates of unemployment, being uninsured, the cost of healthcare, and the cost of education, not to mention the role played by gentrification (displacement from neighborhoods and what can result from it). Overall, housing is an important part of everyone’s day-to-day life and many factors, especially the widening inequality gap, shape an individual’s experience.
